“Strengthening relationships with past pupils around the globe”

Howard and his family relocated from  the Free State to White River in 2010 to pursue new opportunities and settled happily into the Uplands community. His wife, Lindsay, is Academic Assistant and currently teaching at Uplands College and his son, Matthew, is currently at the College. Jade matriculated from Uplands in 2013 and is studying at Pretoria University. As a director of companies for many years within the clothing and textile industries, Howard is currently the National Sales and Marketing Director for the Ruggedwear brand in Southern  Africa. He has a great passion for Independent Education and has 15 years experience at board level, in various leadership positions, and is Chairman of the Uplands Board.

General Manager at Glencore's Lydenburg Smelter. Born in Laingsburg in 1967 and a teacher by profession. Holds a Higher Diploma in Education, National Diploma in Engineering and currently studying towards an Executive Masters Degree in Business Administration at UCT. Conducted operational efficiency studies in France, Germany, Austria and Sweden.  Married to Machelle, teaching at Flamboyant School in White River, and we have two daughters, Rene and Andrea at Uplands College. Sports include table tennis, golf and hiking.

Born and educated in Johannesburg. After working in the government schooling sector for seven years, I moved to the Lowveld and Independent schooling at Uplands College as the Sports Co-ordinator, Hostel Master and Senior Geography teacher.  This was an exciting time with the school growing from strength to strength. After eight years at the College I moved to Uplands Preparatory as the Deputy Head. A short physical move but a huge paradigm shift to working with younger children. I am privileged to work in this wonderful environment with a dynamic team, supportive parents and great children. As a Headmaster I thrive on the challenge of 21st century teaching and learning.

Married to Ashleigh, we share a passion for raising our family, and education as a career choice. Three sons - Andrew, Matthew and James - keep me young at heart as we journey through school together. I enjoy squash, golf, almost anything with a ball, the outdoors and relish the occasional Dad’s and Lad’s cricket game.

Nic and his family moved to the Lowveld in 2007, mainly as a lifestyle change and to take the children away from the social life of the malls of Johannesburg. Both children, Shelley and Chris, have since matriculated from Uplands. Nic was a Chartered Accountant in a life lived now long ago, and currently serves on company boards in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Over time, he has invested privately in a number of smaller businesses which are managed by others out of those centres. He is a keen mountain biker, loves travel, sailing, flying, fishing, wildlife, camping, exploring and life in general. Nic joined the College Board in 2008 which he chaired from 2011 to 2014.

Roland was born and educated in France and moved to South Africa in 1973 aged 20. He worked within the building industry until about 1995 and then studied Theology through UNISA and John Wesley College (Methodist Seminary). He was ordained Priest in the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Pretoria in 1998.

  • Member of the leadership structures of the Anglican Diocese of Mpumalanga
  • Archdeacon of the Lowveld Archdeaconry (Barberton; Nelspruit; Kanyamazane; Matsulu; Malelane; Komatipoort; Schoemansdal; Kamhlushwa; Mzinti; Mbuzini)
  • Rector of the United Church of Christ the King (Komatipoort and Malelane) since 1998
  • Served on the board of The Riverview Prep. School in Malelane (2000 to 2007)
  • Served on the board of Uplands Prep. School as “Anglican Church’s Rep.” (2010 to 2015)

Served on the board of Uplands College as “Anglican Church’s Rep.” (2010 to 2015)

Roland now serves on the Uplands School Board as the Anglican Church’s Representative. (He was elected by The Anglican Synod of the Mpumalanga Diocese of 2015 until next Synod seating)

Passion: Christian Ministry / Christian Ecumenism
Hobby: Photography

Born in Johannesburg in 1968.  Schooled in the Lowveld before studying in Durban.  Married Richard in 1994 and then moved back to the Lowveld in 1997 for a better quality of life.  Tracey has two children, Amy and Bryce, who are enjoying all that Uplands has to offer.  She is very involved in the planning and managing of the Uplands Festival and is a member of the Uplands Board.  She is often found near quiet waters bearing a fly rod, wild about nature and people matters.

Mxolisi was admitted as an Attorney in 1997 and he is currently the Chief Operations Officer at Maluleke Seriti Makume Matlala Incorporated . His leadership roles encompass current President of the Foundation for African Business and Consumer Services (FABCOS), Head of Policy at the Black Business Council, National Heritage Council Chairperson and former Administrator of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB). Mxolisi and his wife, Mapula, commute between beautiful Hartebeespoort and picturesque White River. They have four children, two of which, Khensani and Mxolisi, are at Uplands.

Bruce and his family moved from Johannesburg to Nelspruit at the end of 2015. After a career of more than 30 years in the Corporate and Investment Banking world, 18 years of which were spent working overseas, Bruce left RMB to head up the Business Bank for FNB in Mpumalanga. Aside from these responsibilities Bruce has interests in the Commercial and Industrial property development sector and plays an active role in driving Early Childhood Development initiatives locally. Bruce’s wife Dana, an ex-banker, has diverse interests in the art world and is a passionate follower, collector and promoter of contemporary South African art. Both Gemma & Rees are at Uplands Prep and Bruce has older children and grandchildren living in Durban and Sydney.

Jon grew up in Pretoria, attended Pretoria Boys High School and later attained both a Bachelor’s and then a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Jon and his family moved to White River in December 2008 from Johannesburg to take up a business opportunity in Nelspruit. He is married to Pavla, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. They have two children, Nicholas and Daniella who attend Uplands Prep. His career started by working for BMW, locally and in Germany, after which he then left the corporate world in 2001 to become a business owner and entrepreneur. Jon’s hobbies include fly-fishing and music and he is passionate about achieving international standards in South Africa and the Lowveld. He is currently the Chairman of the Uplands Sports Advisory Committee.

Paulina Emily Mokazi is a Minister, and a registered Psychometrist in Independent Practice. She also holds qualifications in Project Management, Human Resource Assessments, and Ministry. Paulina has a passion to assist people to unlock their potential, transform their lives and live in purpose. She worked in the higher education and private sector in various leadership roles. She conducted transformation interventions for large Agri Businesses in South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland, and continues to make an impact in the lives of the marginalized and underserved rural communities. Paulina is married to George and together they have three children, Nhlamulo, Matimba and Ndzalama.

Duncan grew up in the Lowveld, and attended Uplands Prep and later St Andrews College in Grahamstown. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cape Town. After working for a few years in Cape Town, he moved to Hong Kong before returning back to his family farm in White River.  He is married to Colleen and has three children who all attended Uplands. He is a 3rd generation Uplands board member and has been Chairman of both Golden Macadamias and the South African Macadamia Growers association.  He has also served as a director on a number of other boards and trusts. He loves spending time in the African bush as well deep sea fishing in Mozambique. He is passionate about creating a past pupils association that will assist in achieving Uplands’ strategic goals.

Having grown up and attended school in the Lowveld, Andrew went to the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg where he studied a Commerce degree. After university Andrew left South Africa for a gap year in the UK where he worked in various different careers, ending up in a financial role with Deutsche Bank in the City of London . Ten years after his gap year Andrew returned with his wife Anna to the Lowveld to join his father in building bespoke houses in the construction industry, a business which he now runs. Anna holds a Masters degree from the University of Chicago and currently runs her own travel business. Andrew and Anna have three children, Fin, Indi and Max all of whom are at Uplands Prep school. The family love the outdoors and are passionate about living a well balanced life.
